A growing family, a new baby, the need for a home office: these are the moments when a beloved but too-small home either gets left behind or gets reimagined. Some projects are defined as much by their process as their final form. This is one of them. Currently under construction in Glen Ellen, this ground-up custom home is a rebuild following the Tubbs Fire—a moment that reshaped not only the site, but the intention behind what would come next. The project includes both a primary residence and a thoughtfully integrated ADU, reinforcing a broader approach to residential architecture in California that prioritizes flexibility, longevity, and connection to place. While completion is still a ways off, the construction phase offers a rare clarity: an unfiltered look at how the ideas behind the design take shape.

A Japanese-modern transformation of a two-story condominium — expanding into the attic, reimagining light, and crafting spaces that balance serenity with occasion — on the grounds of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Palo Alto, CA Residential Renovation Japanese Modern 2026 Living and dining volume — Peter Coutts Subdivision, Palo Alto, CA — Larson Shores Architects This marks our second full-scale renovation in Palo Alto — and in many ways, our most layered. Commissioned by a Stanford professor and his family, the project began with a clear ambition: to take a two-story condominium within the historic Peter Coutts Subdivision on the Stanford University campus and fundamentally reconceive it, expanding upward into the existing attic to add a third level and rethinking every square foot in between.
