Using the constraints of the site to explore the power of creativity, this home found new heights by digging down, not up.
Located in the secluded rear yard of a populated San Francisco neighborhood, this project demanded a strategic design approach to elevate a single-story cottage into a two-story structure within the confines of an existing, non-conforming rear yard. Originally built as a parking garage for nearby Kezar Stadium, the renovation required strict adherence to the constraints of the planning code, which prohibited additional height. As a result, we opted to excavate into the grade, utilizing more usable square footage. Characterized by sleek lines and inviting hues, the interior seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings, while the newly integrated courtyard expands the first-floor living space, creating a harmonious connection with the outdoors.
